Job description

Reporting to the Manager of Environment, the ideal candidate will employ their knowledge of vegetation, the Alberta Wetland Policy and its associated directives and tools, wetland regulations, delineation, classification, and mitigation; and Water Act regulatory submissions to provide support to our team in the development of projects across a variety of market sectors. They will assist project teams in identifying wetlands, sensitive vegetation, completing field studies, developing appropriate mitigations, and preparing relevant notifications and applications for submission to applicable regulators. It is expected that this job will include taking on a role to further our overall approach of avoiding and reducing vegetation and wetland impacts associated with the diverse projects we support. The ideal candidate will have a great attitude, a willingness to grow as a professional, and can jump in to contribute to our continued growth.


Core qualifications

  • University degree (e.g., B.Sc. or M.Sc.) in an environment focused program such as Environmental Science, Biology, or related discipline.

  • Holds a designation in good standing as a Professional Agrologist, Professional Biologist, or a Registered Professional Forester. “In-training” designations will also be considered.

  • Three years of related experience.

  • Vegetation and/or wetland field survey experience.

  • Strong working knowledge of provincial (wetland/vegetation) regulatory regime.

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.

  • Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to prioritize work.

  • Effective communication of vegetation/wetland requirements to diverse project teams and clients.

  • Team-oriented and suited to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

  • Self-directed and able to work independently.

  • Experience in applying regulations to various energy-sector projects.

  • Working knowledge of regulatory regime in other western Canadian jurisdictions.

Core responsibilities

  • Support the drafting, review, and submission of regulatory applications and associated technical reports to regulators.

  • Support regulatory consultation and provide vegetation, wetland regulatory advice to internal teams and proponent-company representatives.

  • Monitor and interpret changes in applicable legislation and regulatory requirements.

  • Assist in developing vegetation and wetland regulatory strategies for planning and permitting, stakeholder engagement, and regulatory approvals.

  • Conduct desktop and field-based vegetation and wetland assessments.

  • Support knowledge transfer and training of junior and intermediate staff.

  • Collaborate with staff across the company and externally in completing deliverables.

  • Deliver in a fast-paced, dynamic working environment.

  • Complete required corporate operation and administrative activities (time entry, expense submissions, invoicing, reporting, etc.) as required, in a timely manner.

  • Support Maskwa employees in day-to-day business operations.

Location

This is a full-time teleworking position based out of the Edmonton region. Our head office is in Calgary at 140 10 Ave SE. With this role, travel throughout Alberta may be required.
